Hurt in a wreck? Get examined early

If you have been injured in a car accident, our chiropractors evaluate, treat and rehabilitate accident injuries. The single most useful thing you can do is come in early, and that is true even when you feel more or less fine.

The reason is straightforward. Adrenaline at the scene of a crash suppresses pain, and the soft tissue damage from a whiplash mechanism takes time to become inflamed and stiff. It is normal to walk away from a collision feeling shaken but intact, then wake up two days later barely able to turn your head. An examination in the first days finds what is actually damaged before it has a chance to settle into a long-term pattern.

Early treatment also creates the medical record that connects your injury to the collision. A long, unexplained gap between the wreck and the first appointment is the thing an insurer questions hardest.

What we see after a collision

Injuries a crash produces

Many of these do not appear on the day. This is the list our examination works through after a collision.

  • Whiplash
  • Neck pain and stiffness
  • Low back injury
  • Herniated disc
  • Headaches
  • Shoulder and hip pain
  • Muscle spasm
  • Soft tissue and ligament damage
  • Numbness or tingling

Why chiropractic care works well after a crash

A collision loads the spine in a direction and at a speed it is not built for. The result is usually a mix of joints that have stopped moving properly and soft tissue that has been stretched or torn. Both need addressing, and one without the other tends to relapse.

Inflammation makes tissue immobile, and immobile tissue heals slowly. Ligaments have a poor blood supply at the best of times, and worse when inflamed. Mobilising the joint increases blood flow and nutrient delivery into the area, which is why restoring motion early matters more here than in most conditions.

There is a second effect worth naming. A crash is a frightening event, and the body responds by going into a fight or flight state that keeps muscle guarded and sleep broken. Patients regularly report that easing off once treatment starts, and it makes the physical injury easier to treat.

How the billing works

Care after a collision is usually not billed to your health insurance. It goes to auto insurance, to a third-party liability claim against the at-fault driver, or through a letter of protection arranged with your attorney. We handle all three, and there is more detail on our insurance and payment page.

Bring the claim number, the adjuster name and phone number, the police report if you have it, and any imaging done at the emergency room. Auto claims are documentation-heavy. The injury has to be recorded properly, connected to the collision and tracked visit by visit, and getting that right is part of the treatment rather than an administrative afterthought.

What treatment involves

The first appointment is an examination: what happened, where you were hit, what has hurt since, and a physical assessment of the neck, back and any other area involved. Where the findings suggest a disc injury or anything that needs imaging, we investigate before we treat.

From there, treatment usually combines adjustments to restore joint motion, soft tissue work for the muscle and ligament damage, and where a disc is involved, spinal decompression. Visits are frequent at the start and taper as the injury settles. Specific conditions are covered in more detail on our whiplash, neck pain and back pain pages.

Get checked even for a low-speed collision

Whiplash injuries occur at impact speeds well below the point where a car shows serious damage. The condition of the bumper is a poor guide to the condition of your neck. If you were hit and you have any stiffness, headache, tingling or reduced movement, get examined.

FAQ

Auto injury questions

Should I be seen even if I feel fine?

Yes. Adrenaline masks injury at the scene and whiplash often takes a day or more to declare itself. Early assessment finds the damage and records the link between the injury and the collision.

How soon should I come in?

As soon as you are able. A long gap between the wreck and the first treatment is what insurers question most.

Who pays?

Usually auto insurance, a third-party liability claim against the at-fault driver, or a letter of protection through your attorney. We handle all three.

What should I bring?

Photo ID, the claim number, the adjuster contact, the police report if you have one, and any emergency room imaging.

Do I need an attorney?

No. Many of our auto injury patients have none. If you do have one, we work with them on documentation.
