A different technique, not a smaller adjustment

Chiropractic care for children focuses on how well the nervous system is functioning, using a non-invasive approach aimed at supporting the child's overall health. The technique bears very little resemblance to what an adult receives.

There is no manual thrust and no popping sound. Treatment for an infant uses light, sustained fingertip contact, about the pressure you would use to test whether a tomato is ripe. Children get a version scaled to their size and their stage of development. Nothing sudden happens, which is why most children are relaxed about it and many fall asleep.

A parent stays in the room for the whole appointment, and we take as long as the child needs rather than working to a clock.

Care during pregnancy

Pregnancy changes the mechanics of the lower back and pelvis considerably, and it does it quickly. The centre of gravity shifts forward, the lumbar curve deepens to compensate, and relaxin loosens the ligaments that normally hold the pelvis stable. The result for many women is low back pain, pelvic pain and sciatic symptoms down one leg.

Prenatal chiropractic care uses adapted positioning and low-force technique to address that. Tell us how far along you are when you book, because it determines how we position you on the table. If you have any pregnancy complication, tell us that too, and keep your obstetric provider in the loop.

Why parents bring young children

The reasons are usually practical. A baby who will not settle and arches constantly. A toddler with recurring ear trouble. An older child whose posture has changed noticeably, or who is complaining of back pain from carrying a heavy school bag on one shoulder. Teenagers who play sport bring the same kinds of joint restrictions adults do, just in a body that is still growing.

Chiropractic care is not a replacement for pediatric medical care. A child with a fever, a suspected infection or anything acute needs their doctor, and we refer rather than treat when that is the case.

What the first appointment involves

The first visit is history and examination. For an infant that means birth history, feeding, sleep, how they hold themselves and any pattern the parent has noticed. For an older child it covers activity, sport, school bags, screens and any injury. We assess movement and the spine, explain what we found and say plainly whether this is something chiropractic can help with.

Treatment plans for children are typically short. Where nothing has changed within the timeframe we described, we say so rather than continuing.

Colic, ear trouble and what is realistic

Parents ask about these two more than anything else, so it is worth being clear about what care does and does not claim. Chiropractic treatment for an infant works on joint restriction and how freely the child can move and hold themselves, particularly through the neck and upper back. Where a baby will only turn their head one way, or arches consistently to one side, that restriction is a real, examinable finding and it is what we treat.

What we do not do is treat an infection. An ear infection is a medical problem and needs your child's doctor. If your child has a fever, is pulling at an ear and is unwell, that is a call to the pediatrician, not to us. We will tell you the same thing if you describe those symptoms on the phone.

Growing bodies and the things that mark them

Some of the most useful work we do with school-age children is unglamorous. A bag carried on one shoulder every day for years, a bedroom set-up that has a child craning at a laptop on a bed, a sport played hard in one direction only: all of these leave a pattern. Picking it up at nine is a conversation and a few visits. Picking it up at thirty-nine is a longer course of treatment.

Teenagers who play sport get essentially adult care with an important caveat, which is that growth plates are still open and some presentations that look like a simple strain are not. That is a reason to examine rather than assume.

The rest of the family

Most families end up with more than one patient here. Parents come in with back pain or neck pain from work, grandparents with the joint stiffness that comes with age, and everyone at some point with the headaches that start in the neck. Our massage therapy works alongside all of it.

FAQ

Family and pediatric questions

Is it safe for a baby?

Pediatric technique uses light, sustained fingertip contact rather than a manual thrust. Our chiropractors are trained to treat patients from newborns upward and a parent stays in the room throughout.

What do you treat in children?

ADHD, colic, ear infections and general pediatric wellness, plus prenatal care. It is not a replacement for pediatric medical care and we refer when a condition needs a doctor.

Can I be adjusted while pregnant?

Yes, with technique and positioning adapted to your stage. Tell us how far along you are when you book.

Will my child find it frightening?

Most do not, because nothing sudden happens. The visit is quiet, the contact is light and a parent is present.
