When over the counter is not enough

Green Country is difficult for anyone with seasonal allergies. The weather turns quickly, tree pollen, grass and ragweed each take their turn, and for a lot of people the result is months of daily medication and a run of sinus infections on top.

For patients whose symptoms are not controlled by an antihistamine, we offer an injectable corticosteroid designed to release slowly over about three months. The aim is to cover an allergy season rather than a single bad week. Corticosteroids act on the inflammatory process itself rather than only blocking histamine, which is why they help where an antihistamine has stopped being enough.

This is not the right treatment for everyone, and it is not a first line treatment. If your symptoms are managed by an occasional antihistamine or a nasal spray, keep doing that.

Why we treat this seasonally rather than continuously

Corticosteroids are effective and they carry real, well documented risks that rise with repeated and long-term use. Those include effects on blood sugar, blood pressure, bone density, the eyes and the immune response. Using this treatment on a seasonal basis, in a targeted way, and reviewing it each time, is how the benefit is kept in proportion to the risk.

That is also why your medical history is reviewed before treatment rather than after. Diabetes, glaucoma, an active infection, uncontrolled hypertension and a number of other conditions change whether this is appropriate for you at all.

What we go through at the consultation

We ask what your symptoms actually are, when they occur, what you have already tried and at what dose, and how much they interfere with your life. That last part matters. Allergies get treated as a minor nuisance, but months of broken sleep, constant congestion and being unable to be outdoors is not minor, and it is a reasonable thing to want treated properly.

We also go through your full medical history, current medications and any previous reaction to steroid treatment, then explain the risks and the alternatives so you can decide with the facts in front of you.

When allergies turn into something else

Untreated seasonal allergies do not stay a nose problem. Constant nasal inflammation blocks sinus drainage, which is how a run of sinus infections starts, and mouth breathing at night wrecks sleep quality in a way that shows up as daytime fatigue and poor concentration. For patients with asthma, an uncontrolled allergy season makes the asthma harder to control too.

That knock-on effect is the reason treating this properly is worth doing rather than accepting as a fact of spring in Oklahoma.

What else can help

Practical measures do more than most people expect. Tracking the pollen count and timing outdoor activity around it, showering and changing clothes after being outside, keeping windows shut on high count days and running a decent filter indoors all reduce the load your immune system is responding to. None of that is a substitute for treatment where treatment is needed, but it lowers the baseline.

Where allergies are persistent and severe year after year, allergy testing and immunotherapy through an allergist may be a better long-term route than repeated seasonal treatment, and we will say so if that is what your history suggests. Tree pollen leads in early spring, grass follows through late spring and into summer, and ragweed dominates from late summer into the first hard frost.
